Welcome to Continuous Project
I founded my consulting practice in 2018 to help artists and other creative business owners navigate their opportunities and challenges. Today I'm announcing the evolution of my eponymous practice into Continuous Project.
The new name is borrowed from two artworks of (almost exactly) the same title by two artists who influenced each other and whose work was in dialogue during the 1960s and 1970s. From March 1-22 of 1969, Robert Morris presented an exhibition entitled Continuous Project Altered Daily at Castelli Warehouse in New York City, and in 1993, a collection of his essays was published under the same name. Also in March of 1969, Yvonne Rainer initiated a year-long project called Continuous Project - Altered Daily, culminating in three nights of performance at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. The Grand Union dance company emerged from the project, performing together through 1976.
Morris was and Rainer is committed to exploring the boundaries of art through improvisation; dialogue and collaboration; and challenging received ideas of virtuosity. The title of their artworks can be extrapolated to encompass both artist’s practices, or perhaps any kind of practice, which by their very nature are continuous projects altered daily. In this consulting practice, we prioritize sustained curiosity, intention, and process over outcomes and products; evolution and transformation over perfection. In community with clients and students, we are making something, and like Morris's sculpture and Rainer's choreography, the making of it is the thing we are making. We are engaged in and dedicated to a continuous project altered daily.
I'm grateful to the hundreds of artists who have reached out for advice and support, both prior to the founding of this practice in 2018 since; art workers in all sectors of the art world who seek guidance in the evolution of their careers through the work we do; and the accidental entrepreneurs who've found themselves within the creative economy and found this practice to help them apply their creativity to running their businesses. Such big thanks to Becca Lofchie for her elegant and down-to-earth design of the visual identity for this new chapter (including Dear CP), which radiates through this newsletter and illuminates our new website. I invite you to take a look and learn more about the practice and the work we do there.
Thank you for following along so far, and I look forward to sharing more as Continuous Project grows.
Till next time…
